ACCESS Enabled Science Gateway

Infrastructure Type(s): Science Gateway
Roadmap RP Summary:
A science portal or science gateway is a community-developed set of tools, applications, and data integrated through a web-based portal or a suite of applications. They provide access to tools used in cutting-edge research – telescopes, seismic shake tables, supercomputers, sky surveys, undersea sensors, and more. These gateways often connect diverse resources and make them easily accessible, lowering the barriers traditionally required to access these resources. This roadmap integrates a science gateway service (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_gateway). Science gateways provide web-based interfaces that link advanced cyberinfrastructure (CI) components to enhance usability. The CI components linked by a science gateway differ based on specific user community needs, but can consist of one or more of the following components: High performance computing (HPC), data management, cloud-based resources, high throughput computing (HTC), user management, and authentication, authorization, and other security services.

ACCESS Resource Description

RP Activity Summary:
The resource provider supplies information describing their type of resource, including: public facing information like descriptive text, user guide URL, and resource status dates; and non-public information like the names and email addresses of RP staff contacts. ACCESS allocated resource providers will generally enter this information into the ACCESS CyberInfrastructure Description Repository (CiDeR) database themselves, with an estimated effort of 2-3/hours to gain CiDeR access and to enter the information, and ~30 minutes semi-annually to maintain the information. Most other resource providers will provide needed information to ACCESS staff, with an estimated effort of <1 hour, and ACCESS staff will maintain the information into CiDeR for them.

ACCESS Verification: Automated:
ACCESS will verify that CiDeR information is complete automatically on a daily basis, and communicate discrepancies to to the RP.

ACCESS Obtain Science Gateway Allocation

RP Activity Summary:
The science gateway operator requests an ACCESS allocation through the standard process described here and under certain circumstances may request multiple allocations. Once allocations are approved, the gateway provider uses the ACCESS allocation request system to transfer ACCESS credits to one or more particular resource providers. The exchange request may take several days or longer to be approved by the resource provider.

ACCESS Verification: Manual:
The science gateway operator receives and processes AMIE packets which results in local ACCESS allocations for users of the gateway. The science gateway operator tracks allocation usage and submits usage reports to ACCESS.

ACCESS Science Gateway Usage Metrics

RP Activity Summary:
Usage information that Resource Providers report via the AMIE and Usage APIs is automatically ingested into ACCESS XDMoD without requiring additional effort from Resource Providers.

ACCESS Verification: Manual:
ACCESS staff confirm that usage metrics reported through AMIE are viewable in XDMoD.

Pre-requisite badges: ACCESS Allocations
